She actually passed away on May 12th last year but many didn’t notice. Her actions eventually earned her a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Not that many noticed as the prize was given to Al Gore that year. Continue reading as this story is worth your time.
Irena Sendler dead at 98.
There recently was a death of a 98 year-old woman named Irena. During WWII Irena received permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto as social worker. She had an 'ulterior motive' ... She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews. She was able to convince some parents of what was in store for their families. Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried in the back of her truck or in a burlap sack (for larger kids). She also had a dog that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the sounds of the babies if they cried.
During her time of doing this she managed to smuggle out and save 2,500 kids/infants. She was eventually caught and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. After the the war the Soviets considered her a threat.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the children she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war ended she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those children she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted.
In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize but she did not win. Al Gore won for a slide show on Global Warming.
FYI – before she died Irena was cared for in the nursing home. One of the nurses that cared for her was one of the babies she smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto.

A giant well done to Irena Sendler. May you rest in peace.
