The UK Telegraph has an interesting story on the declining …errrr… make that booming polar bear population. Full story at the Telegraph here. Newsbusters covers it here and Gateway Pundit follows up here.
Over the coming days a curiously revealing event will be taking place in Copenhagen. Top of the agenda at a meeting of the Polar Bear Specialist Group (set up under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission) will be the need to produce a suitably scary report on how polar bears are being threatened with extinction by man-made global warming.
This is one of a steady drizzle of events planned to stoke up alarm in the run-up to the UN's major conference on climate change in Copenhagen next December. But one of the world's leading experts on polar bears has been told to stay away from this week's meeting, specifically because his views on global warming do not accord with those of the rest of the group.
What about those stranded polar bears that all the news agencies talked about? Newsbusters reported on an Australian TV station that uncovered that story as a hoax two years ago. Story here.

Remember that wonderful picture of stranded polar bears on an ice floe that were used by folks like soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore to demonstrate how dire the man-made global warming issue is?
Well, ABC television in Australia, on a show called “Media Watch,” recently debunked the entire issue (video available here, h/t NB member dscott).
It turns out -- as NewBuster Jake Gontesky reported on March 20 -- the picture was taken in August, “when every year the fringes of the Arctic ice cap melt regardless of the wider effects of global warming.”
The photographer, Australian marine biology student Amanda Byrd, didn’t think the bears were in any jeopardy:
Gateway Pundit adds the following:
Polar bear numbers in Canada have increased in 11 of 13 regions in recent years.
Another report shows that polar bear encounters on the North Slope oil fields have risen to record levels the last two years. The global warming religionists blame the increase in polar bear sightings on shrinking ice flows. So, now the alarmists are blaming manmade global warming on both increased and decreased polar bear populations.
There are 5 times as many polar bears today as there were 50 years ago:
But I guess none of that evidence stopped 8 Republicans from voting in favor of the Cap and Trade bill last Friday. Voted on nearly sight unseen of course as this has become business as usual with legislation under Obama/Pelosi/Reid.

You are the most arrogant person in the entire history of the planet if you believe you can stop the earth from heating and cooling in its natural cycles. The science is not settled so let's stop the madness. The only thing that climate change legislation will do is bankrupt the nation.

The point is not so much Puffy the polar bear dying you idiot. Think of the polar bear as the canary in the mine, only on a global scale.

Species have gone extinct forever.
We may speed it up.
we'll never make it on the list, because we're the only ones keeping a list.
When we are gone, the earth will rebound.
Unless the cause of our extiction is the earth just being GONE .
Use the private jets and resources creating better situations for people in poverty.
Teach people how to grow food, while replenishing the earth.
Dig wells for people with bad water.
No water, move them to the water.
C,mon AL, put that political capital to work Brother.

If CHICKENS were going extinct, we should take notice... We eat chickens. For people to piss and moan about the polar bears, when few people have even seen one except for a picture or at the zoo, just shows that these animals worshiping morons have too much time on their hands. By the way, the people that have had the unfortunate luck to come face to face with a hungry polar bear in the wild, probably would be singing a different song about "Polar bear rights" if they weren't part of a polar bear turd. PLUS, since polar bears eat warm blooded mammals, wouldn't you think higher temperatures are going to increase the food population of warm blooded animals? If the ice is melting and there is more food, who is going to benefit the most?? The food will be in a more condensed area and the bears will PROBABLY not only figure this nice little tidbit of info out, but I bet they will get fat and happy. If not, animals go extinct and as long as WE don't go extinct, we should be happy and trying to solve WAY more important problems. We have NO control over SOLAR FLARES WHICH CAUSE THE EARTH'S CLIMATE TO CHANGE!!! WAKE UP LIBERALS!! FIGHT STUFF WE CAN CHANGE! At least try and build some HUGE intergalactic space sunglasses if you are going to waste 100's of BILLIONS or maybe EDUCATE OUR YOUTH WITH THAT MONEY! OUR YOUTH! HERE IN AMERICA!

All of the global warming proponents are flying to Copenhagan in their jets to cry about how we are damaging our planet, duh. Mike

You global warming nuts are truly suffering from a mental disorder. Seek medical help immediately! Oh, I forgot, you probably believe in socialized medicine and must wait for your treatment.

I am so sad...If even one polar bear ( I like to call them "puffy" bears, tee hee) is endangered by global warming, I think all the world should do the right thing and stop warming the globe. And do it right now! We have to make the world a safe place for Puffy.

Really well written article - it shows how to distort the truth by selective reporting. The reason that there were only 5000 left in the 1950s was that everyone was shooting them.
Check this article :
At the most recent meeting of the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group (Copenhagen, 2009), scientists reported that of the 19 subpopulations of polar bears, eight are declining, three are stable, one is increasing, and seven have insufficient data on which to base a decision. (The number of declining populations has increased from five at the group's 2005 meeting.)
Some members of the press take advantage of the complexity by stating that "polar bears are not in trouble—their numbers have doubled since the 1960s." That's a disingenuous statement, of course. It is true that polar bear populations rebounded after over-hunting was restricted, but that situation has nothing to do with the threat polar bears now face: the loss of the sea ice habitat essential to their survival.
